Last week, the NavVis team attended INServFM, the annual exhibition for facility management and industrial service. As with many FM industry events, building information models (BIM) were a hot topic. We all know that BIM has reduced costs and improved efficiency for the construction industry. What is less clear is how FM can achieve the same benefits. One of the biggest barriers remains that BIM software is highly specialized and limits the number of stakeholders that can update or even access these 3D models. Another major barrier is the cost of implementing BIM in existing structures where modelling was not part of the planning phase.
At INServFM, attendees got a glimpse of how this gap will be bridged in the future. One key theme was reality capture technology. Solutions like NavVis technology not only make it much easier to capture data for existing buildings but also offer browser-based access to realistic 3D building visualizations. The benefits of reality capture for FM go beyond just making it much faster and more affordable to capture building data. Archibus, for instance, showed INServFm attendees how the NavVis IndoorViewer has been integrated into its CAFM software to visualize building data. NavVis partner Engie were there showing customers how the M3 Trolley and IndoorViewer can be used to take FM digital. NavVis got a few more mentions, including from SPIE, who showed in a keynote how the technical rooms of the Elbphilharmonie were captured with our tech. Korasoft showed off another IndoorViewer integration, this time with SAP.
Another event highlight was a keynote by ISS, which emphasized the need for even more digital technology in FM. At NavVis we are working on a few things to meet this demand, so keep an eye out for how not just reality capture but also IoT and machine learning will shape the future of FM.
