Welcome to NavVis – we are the global leader in indoor mapping, visualization, and navigation technology. Our mission is to fully digitize the indoors and bring the benefits of the digital era to everyone, everywhere.
We’ve launched this blog to share some of the amazing stories about how indoor digitization is changing and shaping the world we live in.
Just consider the impact of global positioning satellites (GPS) and digital maps. Together these two technologies have fundamentally transformed the world outside our doorstep. Transport, logistics, agriculture, ride hailing, food delivery, defense, natural resource extraction – every outdoor industrial process is now powered by GPS and digital maps.
Compare that to the indoors – where 90% of our GDP is created – and you will find a digital wasteland. The vast majority of malls, factories, offices, hospitals, airports, train stations and universities remain untouched by the digital revolution. The reason for this is simple - GPS signals and mapping satellites cannot penetrate buildings.
NavVis was founded to develop technology that could overcome this problem. And after years of research, we found a way to unlock the digital value of indoor wastelands.
Find out how we’re doing it.
How NavVis unlocks the digital value of indoor spaces
Digitization is only as valuable as the data captured. That’s what makes GPS and digital maps so revolutionary - but it’s also where most indoor digitization technology falls significantly short. At NavVis, we were determined to make our technology do for the indoors what GPS does for the outdoors. We wanted to digitize and navigate the indoors without costly and unreliable infrastructure such as Bluetooth or Wifi beacons. And we certainly didn’t want our technology to be dependent on battery life.
Our determination to create truly revolutionary indoor digitization technology led to the creation of the NavVis M3 Indoor Mapping Trolley. The M3 Trolley performs a similar function indoors to what mapping satellites do outdoors – it roves around, capturing every inch of space in 3D. But instead of floating through outer space, the trolley is pushed through indoor spaces. It then automatically captures indoor data with its three lasers, six cameras and several antennas.
To make this data meaningful, we developed our browser-based IndoorViewer software, which transforms indoor data into interactive 3D maps and models. The intuitive, user-friendly IndoorViewer interface can be accessed from any device and requires no technical expertise – only the click of a mouse is needed to navigate the screen or customize an object or location. Ever used Google StreetView? It’s really that easy.
To complete our platform, we wanted to bring the ease of use and accuracy that has made GPS and map apps so popular and convenient to the indoors. Our pioneering smartphone application does just that - based on machine learning and computer vision, the NavVis app uses the smartphone camera to intuitively navigate indoor spaces. It navigates by recognizing the surroundings that appear in the camera lens, guiding users to their destination in 3D. It is immediately useable once an indoor area has been mapped by the M3 Trolley. Without requiring any of the expensive infrastructure needed for other indoor solutions, it also delivers unprecedented location accuracy.
