Captured with NavVis: Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology (CPET) Glycol Unit

Play Play-hover

The glycol unit at the Lyondell-Basell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology (CPET) on the San Jacinto College central campus in Pasadena, TX is a state-of-the-art education facility with a fully operational distillation unit to train students in the plant operations and services. The unit size is (150’ W x 75’ L x 40’ H), and comprised of multiple pumps, storage tanks, exchangers, a distiller column, extensive piping, a multi-level pipe rack, and a 4-story structure.

This complex geometry makes the facility a perfect testing ground to compare traditional terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) with the NavVis VLX wearable mapping system. Using a TLS it took two working days to target, survey and laser scan the facility. Using NavVis VLX required just 25 minutes to capture the same area with speed and precision as high-quality point clouds. Referring to the same survey control, the difference in accuracy was between 4-5mm.
